Should I update to Windows 11?
Practical guidance on when to upgrade and when to stay on Windows 10.
Windows 11 has been out for a while, and many people wonder whether it’s time to upgrade. The short answer: it depends on your PC and how you use it. Here’s what to consider before you click “Upgrade.”
Check if your PC supports Windows 11
Windows 11 has stricter hardware requirements than Windows 10. Your PC needs a compatible 64-bit processor (generally 8th-gen Intel or AMD Zen 2 or newer), 4 GB RAM (8 GB recommended), 64 GB storage, TPM 2.0, and Secure Boot support. Microsoft’s PC Health Check tool can tell you if your machine qualifies. If your PC doesn’t meet the bar, you can’t get official Windows 11 anyway. Staying on Windows 10 is your path for now.
When upgrading makes sense
Upgrade if your PC is eligible and you want the latest security updates, a cleaner interface, and better support for newer hardware and features (like WSA, DirectStorage, and improved HDR). If you’re buying a new computer, it will likely come with Windows 11, and that’s fine. If your current machine is supported and running well, upgrading is reasonable. Just back up your data first.
When to wait or stay on Windows 10
Stay on Windows 10 if your PC isn’t supported, if you rely on older hardware or software that might not be compatible, or if you’re in the middle of a busy season and can’t afford downtime. Windows 10 is still in support until October 2025, so you have time to plan. For businesses, test Windows 11 on a spare machine or a single department before rolling it out everywhere.
Bottom line
There’s no single “right” answer. If your system meets the requirements and you’re comfortable with a change, upgrading to Windows 11 is a reasonable move. If your PC doesn’t qualify or you depend on stability and known software, staying on Windows 10 is perfectly valid. When in doubt, back up your data and, if you’re a business, consider talking to an IT provider who can help you plan the upgrade and avoid surprises.
