Computer won't boot? Troubleshooting steps

What to check when your computer gets power but does not start up.

If your computer is receiving power but not booting up, it may be due to a faulty power button connection, incompatible hardware, or a damaged motherboard. Try checking the power button connections, removing non-essential hardware, and reseating the RAM to isolate the issue.

Common causes when your computer won't boot

When a computer receives power but does not boot, it usually indicates an issue with one of the following:

Power supply issues

  • Insufficient power: The power supply may not be providing enough power to the system. This can happen as power supplies age.
  • Faulty power supply: A defective power supply can send power to the motherboard but fail to start the system.

Connection problems

  • Loose connections: Check all power cables, especially the 24-pin connector to the motherboard. Ensure they are securely connected.
  • Power button issues: A faulty power button or its connection to the motherboard can prevent the system from starting.

Hardware failures

  • Faulty components: Issues with RAM, GPU, or CPU can block the boot process. A single faulty RAM stick can halt the system.
  • Motherboard damage: Damaged components on the motherboard, such as capacitors, can prevent booting.

Troubleshooting steps

Step 1: Check connections

  • Inspect all power cables and ensure they are firmly connected.
  • Verify the power button cable is correctly connected to the motherboard.

Step 2: Test minimal hardware

  • Disconnect non-essential components (e.g., GPU, additional RAM sticks).
  • Leave only the CPU, one stick of RAM, and the power connectors connected.
  • Attempt to power on the system.

Step 3: Inspect RAM and CPU

  • Reseat the RAM sticks, testing one at a time.
  • Ensure the CPU is properly seated and the cooler is functioning.

Step 4: Test the power supply

If possible, test the power supply with a multimeter or swap it with a known working unit.
